When a Tankless Water Heater Doesn’t Make Sense for Your Home

Tankless water heaters are a great upgrade for many Ann Arbor homeowners, but they’re not always the perfect fit for every household. At Mitch the Plumber, we want you to understand both the pros and the limitations so you can make the best decision for your home and budget.

Not Every Home Needs Endless Hot Water

One of the biggest selling points of a tankless system is “endless hot water.” But if your home only has one or two people, or your hot water usage is generally low, you may not take full advantage of that benefit. A traditional tank system may provide plenty of hot water for your daily needs at a lower upfront cost.

Lower Demand = Longer Payback

Tankless units are more energy-efficient, but the savings show up over time. If your home doesn’t use much hot water—maybe you live alone, travel often, or simply don’t put heavy demand on the system—the long-term utility savings may not outweigh the higher installation cost.

Your Home’s Existing Setup Matters

Many older Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County homes were built with venting, gas lines, and electrical systems meant for traditional tank heaters. Upgrading to tankless may require:

  • New gas line sizing
  • Electrical upgrades
  • New venting installation

These changes add cost, and if your household hot water demand is modest, the investment may not be necessary.

Small Households Don’t Always See the Benefits

If you’re not running multiple showers, laundry, and a dishwasher all at the same time, a tank heater performs just fine. Tankless units shine in homes with larger families, high simultaneous usage, or bigger hot water demands—like large tubs, rain showers, or frequent guests.

When a Traditional Tank Is Still the Best Choice

You may be better off sticking with a tank-style water heater if:

  • Your household has only one or two people
  • You don’t use a lot of hot water at once
  • You prefer a lower upfront cost
  • Your home’s current plumbing setup isn’t tankless-ready
