Why Your First Spring Garden Hose Test Matters: Checking for a Frozen or Cracked Hose Bib

As the weather warms up in Ann Arbor and homeowners start getting their yards ready for spring, one of the simplest (but most important) plumbing tests you can do is turning on your outdoor garden hose for the first time. That first test isn’t just to rinse off the porch—it’s your chance to find out whether your hose bib secretly froze and cracked over the winter.

Why Hose Bibs Freeze and Crack

Even if you shut off your outdoor water in the fall, small amounts of water can remain inside the hose bib or supply line. When temperatures drop, that water expands as it freezes—sometimes causing the pipe or faucet body to crack. You won’t typically notice the damage until spring, when you turn the water back on and it starts leaking inside the wall or basement.

How to Safely Test Your Hose Bib in the Spring

Before you hook up the hose or start spraying down the patio, follow these steps:

  • Turn the water on slowly: Open the hose bib just a quarter turn and listen for rushing water that doesn’t stop.
  • Check inside your home: Look at the wall behind the hose bib—usually in your basement or utility area. If you see water dripping, spraying, or pooling, that’s a strong sign of a cracked pipe.
  • Look for exterior leaks: Water dripping from around the faucet body (not just the spout) can indicate freeze damage.
  • Feel for reduced pressure: Weak or uneven flow from the spout may mean water is leaking behind the wall instead of reaching the hose bib itself.

What to Do If You Find a Leak

If your hose bib is leaking—inside or outside—it’s important to shut the water back off immediately. A cracked outdoor faucet can quickly lead to water damage inside your home.

This is where a licensed plumber comes in. A professional can replace the damaged hose bib, repair any cracked piping, and make sure everything is sealed properly so you’re ready for the rest of the season without worry.
